Working at Candela Gallery

PART-TIME / FULL-TIME

Candela operates with three full-time staffers and isn’t often hiring part-time or full-time positions. However, once in a blue moon, that opportunity may arise. If you’d like to be notified about potential job openings at the gallery, feel free to join our work opportunity mailing list.

INTERNSHIPS

Candela offers students and recent graduates a two semester long internship (7-8 month) that focuses on the administrative tasks regarding exhibition design and programming.  The internship is part-time (7-12 hours/week) and can qualify for school credits and/or a small honorarium. We follow the academic calendar so internships begin at the start of the FALL (Aug - Dec), SPRING (Jan - May), and SUMMER (May - September) semester.

An ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter who has strong organizational and social skills. We’re looking for 2-3 interns a year who have a strong interest in learning about the photographic arts, gallery operations, the Richmond arts community, and assisting staff with administrative and creative tasks.

Our goal is to provide interns with a well-rounded overview of the business in all aspects of Candela’s operations. They are often the first point of contact for gallery visitors. Interns are responsible for daily maintenance and administrative tasks, including:

  • Managing the front desk --> feeling comfortable speaking to people, answering general questions about the shows as well as answering the phone

  • Maintaining a clean space, vacuuming, and tidying up both galleries each week

  • Proficient skills in writing, research, and design programs

  • Attending openings and gallery related events -> helping behind the scenes with set-up / take down, keeping an eye on the artwork and front door, selling books

  • Install and de-install of exhibitions

  • Managing database entry and helping track and coordinate artwork returns

  • Research and writing content for PR and marketing purposes

  • Website development when needed

  • Occasional scanning and retouching on archival documentation projects

VOLUNTEER

Candela occasionally seeks volunteers to assist with larger events, like our annual summer party for the UnBound! exhibition. Often, volunteers assist with setup/takedown of decorations, processing ticket payments or guest lists, tending the wine and beer bar, or occupying the front desk to greet and answer questions for guests.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

We love working with local makers and performers for our events. Over the years we’ve hired live musicians, printers, burlesque performers, chefs, acrobats, graphic designers, caterers, art handlers, and screen printers. We never know what we’ll need for a specific exhibition or event, so if you’re a local creative, come by and introduce yourself! Chances are, we’ll find a way to work together.
