In Sugar Honey Iced Tea, Hudson-based Sara J. Winston documents motherhood alongside her experience with chronic illness, presenting scenes as both patient and mother:

"Sugar Honey Iced Tea includes photographs made over an eight year period when I began to acknowledge the ambient state of overwhelm that is steadfast in my life.

I learned the phrase "sugar honey iced tea" in the fourth grade from a substitute teacher in my New York State public school. The phrase is a euphemism and acronym for the word shit. I began using the term regularly sometime in 2019 after my daughter was born.

I am a chronically ill parent of a young child and until recently, the daughter of a chronically ill parent. Sugar Honey Iced Tea is a description and response to the pace of some of life’s challenges: months spent nursing an infant, years spent caring for ay sick body, hoping and imagining a more equitable future, waiting for a child to fall asleep, wishing for the sun to rise, and trying to visualize the idea that, like my dad often said, we are too visceral to be intelligent."

The book Sugar Honey Iced Tea features photographs by Sara J. Winston and writing by Ileana Ramirez. It will be available in June of 2025 with a book launch event scheduled at Candela Gallery on June 5 at 4pm.
